Matt Cruise

Matt is a young Cabin boy aboard the airhsip named the Aurora.  His father worked on this ship, but also died here while trying to repair the ship.  He came on this ship to be close to his father, and to help support his small family of his Mother, and his two sisters, Isabelle, and Sylvia.  He has been working on this ship for 3 years now, and expects to get the promotion to Jr. Sailmaker at the end of this next voyage.

Benjamin Molloy

The balloon captain of the Endurance.   He is Kate de Vries' grandfather.  He saw many exotic animals while flying his hot air balloon around the globe, but unfortunatley his balloon was damaged.  The Aurora rescued him from the sinking balloon, but he later died in the first chapter.  He told Matt about the creatures he saw before dieing.

Captain Walken

He is the captain of the Ship Aurora.  He worked with Matt's father, and promised him the position of Sailmaker, but he must break his promise during this book.

Kate de Vries

A rich passenger of the Aurora, who makes special connections to Matt early on.  She is also the granddaughter of Benjamin Molloy.  She came on this trip to hopefully find the strange creatures that her grandfather saw, and to prove that he was not insane.

Miss Simpkins

She is Kate's annoying Chaperone.  She is against Kate's interaction with anyone, especially Matt, and turns out to be a major neussance throughout the whole book.

Bruce Lunardi

The son of the owner of the airship liner that the Aurora belongs to.  Due to his 2 years in the airship academy he is given the position of Jr. Sailmaker by Captain Walken.  He is a major competator to Matt all throughout the book.

Szpirglas

A world renowned pirate who steals ffrom the Aurora at the beginning of the book.  He is the main protagonist for the majority of the book.

Crumlin

Szpirglas' first mate.  He is a very nasty pirate who has trouble with a cloud cat near the end of the book.
